Empire refers to a fictional universe created by me and a group of friends. We write short stories, make videos, and invent scenarios that all take place in the same timeline. As an artist, I enjoy illustrating characters, buildings, and scenes from the short stories.
Before Empire became a narrative storyline, it was simply a game that we would play together. The game itself (known as Empires) is more of a team-building exercise, a fun way to break the ice during those awkward mandatory group introduction things.
What you’ll need:
- a bunch of friends
- post-it notes or other bits of paper
- writing utensils
How to play:
Designate one person as the Reader. All the other players write a name on a post-it note. This can be the name of a celebrity, a movie character, or just a name you make up. The Reader can even announce a theme for the round (Italian names, names that start with P, names of places, etc) to challenge your creativity. After the players have written their names, they anonymously give them to the Reader, who then reads them aloud once. Once all the names are read, players take turns guessing who wrote each name. If a player guesses correctly, the player they guessed joins their empire, and is allowed to help them remember names. If the leader of an empire is guessed, all of the players in that empire join the player who guessed. The player that ends up with all of the other players in their empire wins the round.

After playing this game a lot, we decided it would be fun to collect all of the funny names we imagined and use them to create characters in a Marvel-esque universe that spanned across multiple short stories. Over time, the universe has grown and the story has become more complex.
